What Does Math Look Like Now?-Videos:

This video is part of Sarasota County Schools’ “Making Sarasota #1 in Mathematics” grant program, funded by the Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation. In this lesson, Phillippi Shores Elementary School 3rd grade teacher, Jill Marsh, leads her students in an exercise on estimating the number of Skittles in a jar. The exercise teaches students to use and apply critical thinking, reasoning, and math skills to solve a real world problem.

This is a companion video designed to accompany the “Estimating Skittles in a Jar – Guided Lesson” featuring 3rd grade teacher Jill Marsh and her students at Phillippi Shores Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida. In this video, Ms. Marsh’s students discuss their thinking in responding to an estimating exercise on the number of Skittles in a jar. Both videos are part of Sarasota County Schools’ “Making Sarasota #1 in Mathematics” grant program, funded by the Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation.

Teachers Explaining How Math Has Changed:

“Creating More Confident Learners” is a group interview video that is part of Sarasota County Schools’ Making Sarasota #1 in Mathematics grant program, funded by the Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation. The video, which was recorded at the Maximizing Math Mentality Workshop held at Toledo Blade Elementary School on February 15, 2018, features teachers Deb Jackson, Darlene Brooks, Katie Koster and Christina Terminello discussing how changes to the school district’s approach to math instruction for elementary schools have positively impacted their students’ performance, confidence and learning outcomes.

Building Number Sense At Home:

Watch the above video to help your child build number sense by thinking about the relationship between one number and another. This will give you an idea of the type of questions you can ask your child to get them to think about numbers and representing them.
